So, for New Year's we read through a list of Colombian traditions and decided eating 12 grapes at midnight. We were supposed to eat 12 grapes in 60 seconds while making a wish for each grape...I don't think any of us made it, but it was fun to incorporate a Colombian tradition into our normal festivities.
Throughout Christmas break (and since we came home), we have been praying about Yuly's schooling situation. Through a series of events, we decided to put Yuly in full-time public school. I know that is a totally different direction than I said we would go, but one thing I have learned in this process is that flexibility is a key. I feel that, in general, I am a fairly adaptable and flexible person. It's a good thing because this experience has required me to be even more flexible than I ever expected!!
With some good encouragement and insights from my adoption yahoo group, we took a deep breath and started Yuly at school. She has done really well and we are blessed that she has a very good teacher. She tells me that she loves school. Her English has taken off and it is really fun to hear her talk about her day. I just had my first parent-teacher conference and it was all positive. Her social skills are good and she is doing most of her math work with the class. Of course, her reading and language arts skills are lagging, but she is very smart and I know it will come.

That is a fun new year's tradition! I definitely want to incorporate a couple we have read about. I am so glad to hear that things are going so well with Yuly in school. It sounds like the right choice.
Outstanding. Glad its going well. I know that was a tough decision for you but I'm sure it will be great for Yuly in the long run.
Public school was far from my first choice for our kids too. But like you said, you find yourself being more flexible once you get them home. We had planned to home school all of them, but then reality set in and we realized that wasn't going to be possible. We could not find a private school close to us that would accept our kids until they spoke English.
So, we are mostly using this school year to get the English really going and to learn the basics.
